That's strange. I was just in Takayama (Gifu), and I'm pretty sure I saw the EVA Doritos there...

Mari,
Spam is made up of many things and you can't really define the taste. It's not ham, more like ランチョンミート.
You can buy cans of Spam in Japan but they are at least 400 yen per can, much more expensive than in the US.
It's not only Hawaii. Guam apparently eats more Spam per person than anywhere else in the world. I think the climate has something to do with it. They eat a type of Spam in Okinawa called TULIP.
Raymond, I think you mean Spam musubi (which is the wikipedia entry you linked to). Musubi is just a type of riceball.
Also connected to Hawaii and Shingon buddhism, here is a virtual tour of part of what used to be the main Koyasan affiliated mission in Hawaii (it's not anymore, long story).

I used to have a lot of Spam meals because I grew up poor, and I don't think it is not anymore unhealthy than sausage. Just have to be moderate like any meat. I like to have it every once in a while, with macaroni and cheese! It sounds gross, but it is a comfort food to me.

Ichi - Katabrella wa ii desune! What a great idea!

Ni - Doritos are major junkfood, but do taste excellent (like most junkfood), especially with any kind of salsa or sour cream :)-

San - Spam, Uffda! Why do you think junk email is nicknamed "Spam?" ;)

Spam is made right here in Minnesota, at the Hormel plant in the city of Austin to be exact, just about an hour-and-a-half straight south of the Twin Cities. It tastes kinda like ham, but a lot more greasy (slimey) and rubbery. When you open the can, you have to scrape the jello-like goo off the top of the Spam loaf to get at the Spam itself - only the truly adventurous or people without tongues eat the goo...my dog won't go near it!! NASTY!!!

Spam is made from leftover pork scraps not suitable for use in the production of other Hormel meat products. Yep - parts is parts (@-@) and just what particular part(s) of the pig are contained in that can of Spam you're about to eat is anyone's guess...Bon apetit! ;)

In Minnesota, we only eat Spam if it's a life or death emergency and there's absolutely nothing else to eat - seriously. In Minnesota Spam is considered bomb shelter food (something for the roaches to eat 'cause they'll be the only things left alive after WWIII ;))or we put a few cans in the back of our cars for extra weight and traction in heavy snow, or for (last resort!!!) emergency rations in case you get stranded off I94 in a blizzard.

Minnesotans have absolutely nooooo idea why the heck you folks in Hawaii are so nuts about it...it's summer...hopefully not too much chance of being stranded in a blizzard for a while, so you Hawaiians can have all of mine. ;)

Mari

Hi There I have never eaten SPAM or I didn't realized it was SPAM. Taste is close to ham? Sound like un healthy meat.

In Hawaii SPAM is king! We even make a type of Sushi with SPAM called Musubi. (Doesn't that mean "brick" in Japanese?) Oishi so!

A few years ago, someone opened a Spam restaurant here in the Philippines. It ended up closing down about a year later or so. Never tried it and never thought of going there either. Personally, Spam's something you eat at home or prepare yourself..
