To the other responders about screens, many of Japanese houses I've been in do not have screens. The sliding door to the balcony is the only barrier between inside and outside.

As for why the windows are open, Mari's answer will likely be "to exchange the air." At least that is my wife's and my mother-in-law's reasoning.

I was going to post the same comments as Jack - screens work great at keeping them out so you don't have to spend money on chemical repellants. Do you have your windows open to dilute the cleaning products, or just to air-out your apartment? Will it do any good to spray for mosquitos while your windows are open (they just keep comming in), and of you close them, is is it safe to breathe that stuff?! Try Jack's (and mine) method of swatting/squashing 'em - it's cheaper and can be a lot of fun if they land on someone you're just looking for an excuse to slap! ;)

If I were to open my windows now there would be no mosquitos to worry about - it's snowing and 15 F in Minnesota - a little chillier than Tokyo! -_*

I won't see any mosquitos again until May!

The stairs from Japan and the one from Milan are among my favorites... Visually they are great but aren't they a little dangerous without handrails?

The stairs from the Basel public records office are also very impressive! Looks like climbing to a UFO :-)

I hate bugs in my apartment, but they can't come inside because I have screens on anything that can be opened. If one sneaks in, I swat it or smash it with whatever is available!

Can you get screens for your windows?
