It's not that embarassing. I typed in my own country and laughed. Then I went to a corner and wept.

I gree with the other posts that the wiki stats need sound demographic research for validity. What if it's not only a very a specific and small demographic editing the most often, but maybe just a few particular individuals? (I hope they keep track of this kind of thing, to know who is editing what and how often) I agree that what's posted on wikipedia is definitely not an accurate representation of what the majority of people in any given country or culture focus on as important. Same goes for politics in the US - politics and elections are like death and taxes - unavoidable miseries of life we all have to endure - I'm just soooo glad it's over for a few days at least! ;)

What's most important to me is quality time with my family. Anything that gets in the way of that (like my dead-end job!) sucks. I try my best to keep up with current events around the world, and educate myself about other cultures and worldviews, but most days it's simply overwhelming to try to sort the valuable info from the crap. So to get away from it all and clear my head, I go home and bake cookies! ^-^

I once heard an interview with a Wikipedia founder, where he admitted that their largest minority of topics involved anime and manga. I suspect there is a disproportionately large group of Internet users with interests in that area. We -- er, I mean "they" -- don't necessarily represent the general public.

In any case, I suspect that the American preoccupation with politics might not be entirely positive. I like to say that a person's worth is inversely proportional to his involvement in politics. Valuable people like doctors and engineers actually accomplish things, but most politicians don't do anything but talk.

Unfortunately, we Americans have learned from George W. Bush that just because a politician is worthless, that doesn't make him harmless.

It's easy to only see the positive side of what other people are doing when you're somewhere else... but I don't think the intensity of our interest in politics in the US is a good thing. It's like, if we're not working or on our Blackberries or whatever, we're arguing about politics or religion. Nobody ever relaxes, everybody is always tense. And it's just made everybody choose sides against each other here.

And the reason those pages get edited a lot on the English Wikipedia is basically because people are arguing about the edits. Whereas in an anime or manga you might have a new character that needs to be added to the entry and therefore you make an edit, what needs to be added about Jesus Christ at this point? He was alive 2,000 years ago. There is no new information. All those edits are just people basically having an "edit war".

Of course, I think it's probably just as telling to look at the longest Wikipedia articles. Honestly, the longest one I have found on the English site is the article on Morning Musume! That is kind of scary. (Ok, yes I did go to that page, I'm sure I had a good reason at the time.)

I don't think there's a need to take these results too seriously. Wikipedia statistics only take into account the interests of people who edit Wikipedia. I've noted for some time now that Japan's Internet is under-developed. Basically, only a minority of Japanese do some kind of intense activity on the Internet like Wikipedia. So these people are very interested in anime. (just to clarify any misunderstanding, I'm talking about Internet activities requiring the actual use of a computer, not mobile phone. It's hard to edit Wikipedia on a phone! see also http://www.pliink.com/mt/marxy/archives/2007/03/the-second-digi.html)

On English Wikipedia, there are enough people that are interested in politics (and maybe that's how "normal" people get involved often), but there are a lot of people into manga and anime. Perhaps per article they don't make many edits, but there are a lot of such articles! How many articles on Pokemon? I bet more than science articles.

That's not too embarrassing. It could be worse. :-)
