This is a site where you can see just the covers of magazines. Hmm, there are a lot, actually. I can't find the number of ladies’ magazines (monthly, weekly) published in Japan. It is just too many.
Which one do I read? Actually, I hardly read magazines. Sometimes, I read the design and interior magazineCasa or PEN, or CREA traveller. I hardly pick up ladies' fashion magazines; they have hardly any parts worth looking at or reading. Strange to say, but the weekly special is Reversal of Love. The cover is a silhouette, because he is one of Johnny's, Junichi Okada.
Looking at recent back issues, "interior", "Blood-type analysis" (yes, Japanese like it, as I said before.)"the magic recipe", "winner woman, loser woman", ha ha, this is a typical an an title. I think. Well, an an positions itself to tell the truth and say it like it is.
By the way, a magazine targeted at teens is Olive. A magazine with a "Ms." target is Croissant. GINZA is a magazine more fashion-oriented, especially, for women who like "brands."
Brutus
The target of Brutus would be guys in their 20s and 30s. They have fashion, health, food, and they especially focus on art and culture coverage. October 1, this week's special, is "The wine boom is back." Last week, it was "The mode is fight!" The articles are a discussion between Karl Lagerfeld and Hedi Slimane. Leni Kravitz picks his favorite brand. In a recent back issue, they had a "product design special", "the best mail order food", "Boy's life, we were born to take photos!" etc. Hmm, every edition looks fine to me. For people under Brutus' age range, there is Popeye.
Casa Brutus
Yes, Casa Brutus is a brother magazine of Brutus. Since architecture and interior design articles are popular, they made a special magazine for it. Sometimes interior or architecture magazines and books are so deep, difficult, and only for art school students. But Casa is light, not so deep. They write about other stuff, like food or restaurants from the point of view of art. So it is easy for me to buy and read too. This month's special is The Mediterranean Museum of Tadao Ando. This magazine sponsored Tokyo design week too. One or twice a year, the magazine attaches small stuff like a coaster of Eames design, or the figure of a designer's chair.
In one back issue, they had a MUJI special. Do you know MUJI? The name brand is MUJIRUSHI RYOHIN, it isn't really a name, but literally means "unbranded quality." MUJI started their shop as an antithesis to the idea of a "brand." But they have shops in Europe and I heard it is very popular. I sense that MUJI became a brand. Other specials were slow food/slow life, slow architecture. Watch the Olympics with an eye for design, "People in the world are now talking about this restaurant.".
kunel looks nice to me. ku means eating, neru means sleeping. As its name suggests, kunel seem to follow the trends of slow, simple, natural life. Just looking at a page, I feel relaxed. Their specials are "traveling in South France by car," "Hometown special meals," "Potato, chestnuts, pumpkin," "More wash, more use, enjoy linen"
In back issues, you will see their natural mood, yes, yes, eating and sleeping is the basis of our life. I can agree with this magazine's theme.
kunel
This was released last year, I think. kunel looks nice to me. ku means eating, neru means sleeping. As its name suggests, kunel seem to follow the trends of slow, simple, natural life. Relax
relax!!Hmm this is a typical subculture magazine, you might tell because of their site too. This week's special is denim. This magazine has no limit to their themes or specials. They will cover something if it is cool and upcoming. We say "KITERU".
Back issues include Petsound, Beach Sandal, Mike Mills well, see? Anything is okay. They had a Doraemon special before. Guess what! It had a Gaian poster!! (Ahh the U.S people don't know this topic?). Of course I bought it.
Digital Mutts
Digital Mutts is an online magazine. Ah! I wish they made an English version. Please try to click where you can. You may come across beautiful pages. This online magazine does not follow news at all; their articles are about Town, People, Art and Travel. They have a bit of a nostalgic mood, vertical writing making it all the more so.
