Asashoryu wins the Autumn sumo title after a playoff with Kotooshu. Here is the picture. He won the tournament 6 times consecutively. This record was set in 1963 by Taiho who was one of the big three in the 1970s. If he wins the next tournament, a Mongolian guy can set a new record in Sumo history.
I'm not into Sumo so much, but if I had to choose one Yokozuna, it would be Chiyonofuji. He is a macho type, his nickname is wolf. He is a cool guy who looks like Marcus Chong who appeared in the Matrix.
Hi Martin
Thank you for link to your great blog, Martin. When you write something, everything seems to be very achademic! :-)

I was in Ryogoku, the place of the main sumo stadium in Tokyo, on Friday, and I was surprised how few souvenirs were for sale there. I would have liked to pick up something nice for friends, but really, the area seriously lacks in development. With the Edo museum next door, you would imagine that savvy business entrepreneurs would flock to try to sell sumo posters (with the cool caligraphy), calenders and so on, but there was almost nothing except strange cakes, tacky beer mugs and a few "wood-block print" style items.
Anyway, sumo is really great to watch!

I used to be big fan of sumo a while ago, back when there was intense rivalry between the big hawaiians (Akebono, Musashimaru and Konishiki) and the Japanese brothers Takanohana and Wakanohana.
However, recently it's become slightly interesting again. Asashoryu seems to have changed into somewhat of a likeable fellow, and that new Bulgarian wrestler (Kotooshu) seems to be one of the future greats!
