The Ig
Nobel awards 2005 have been announced. Yes
that one! The award for useless invention,
something, well they said "Every Ig Nobel Prize winner has done
something that first makes people LAUGH, then makes them THINK."
Since every winner attended the ceremony,
this would be a treasured prize I suppose.
Which one
do you like the most? Me? Of course the Literature
awards!!
"The Internet entrepreneurs of Nigeria, for
creating and then using e-mail to distribute a bold series of short
stories, thus introducing millions of readers to a cast of rich characters
- General Sani Abacha, Mrs. Mariam Sanni Abacha, Barrister Jon A Mbeki
Esq., and others - each of whom requires just a small amount of expense
money so as to obtain access to the great wealth to which they are
entitled and which they would like to share with the kind person who
assists them." ha ha ha! Nobody attended to the ceremony,
I wanted to see them.
From Japan, Dr Nakamatsu got a Nutrition
award for photographing and retrospectively analyzing every meal he had
consumed during a period of 34 years (and counting). Dr Nakamatsu is well
known in Japan as "squirrel". Here is his website. You can buy his inventions
from an online shop, jumping shoes (exactly :-/(), Love Jet (make your sex nice), and Putter
(have you seen this before?). Well when you check his profile, there is great history. Maybe they don't
lie. (if he was a crook,
Ig Nobel would not choose him.) He said "The only individual who
licensed 16 patents to IBM." I heard it is true, but sometimes he is
introduced as if he have invented
the floppy disk. Of course it is not true, IBM
invented it. I heard when IBM began selling
floppy disks in Japan, they made a contract with someone who had a license
which was close to
the technology of floppies. However I read this on IBM's side, Nakamatsu's
side doesn't want to talk about the details, I heard..
I wrote about Ig Noble last year in this "Bowlingual" post. Then I have realized
Japanese got some awards
in the last four years. In 2005, Dr.
Nakamatsu for "photographing
and retrospectively analyzing every meal he has consumed during a period
of 34 years". In 2004, Daisuke Inouse "for inventing karaoke,
thereby providing an entirely new way for people to learn to tolerate each
other." In 2003, Yukio Hirose "for his chemical
investigation of a bronze statue, in the city of Kanazawa, that fails
to attract pigeons." Then in 2002, Takara got it for "computer-based
automatic dog-to-human language translation device-Bowlingual". Not
only for them, many Japanese got this prize in past!! I am very proud
of our country.
