Italian Jean maker Diesel made strange Japanese TV ad last year. This year, they have an exhibition based on the main theme "Japan". I like the traditional mask painted Manga Style and Noh mask dog by Gendai Bijyutu Nitohey. It's cheap and ironic. This is their official site, and you can check other art here.
Speaking of art and Japan, I got an e-mail about this project "Japonizim Art Initiative- SEEDS tokyo Impact" , they will have events. If you are in Tokyo, check it out.
And one my favorite art event "Tokyo Design Fiesta" will come in early December again. Of course I will go. I am looking forward to see unique items and powerful people there again.
By the way, after the Design Fiesta. From December 13th, I will go to the U.S. maybe around Las Angeles. Please let me know about nice restaurants and nice hotels around there..
P.S
Since I said I would pick Sadako costume on Halloween, my friend let me know a site where I can buy it. Wow! it's more expensive than I thought! And actually . animal masks, especially this Dalmatian mask is more scary than Sadako... That site has many storage costumes and they said this year Tarako head gear and Tarako costume are Hot! (because of the Tarako TV ad).*

I can't think of many famous LA restaurants that would have something you'd never eaten before, except this:
http://www.roscoeschickenandwaffles.com/
which is very good, even if it sounds strange. You can ask them to replace the regular waffles with buckwheat waffles.
In LA, Pink's Hot Dogs (http://www.pinkshollywood.com/) is famous, though I have never eaten there myself. Same thing with The Hat (http://www.thehat.com/). Actually, maybe I don't suggest those if you are conscious about your health.
There are a lot of good Chinese restaurants in San Gabriel, but maybe you already have access to a lot of that?
Honestly, though, it seems like many of the restaurants I've heard about recently serve Japanese food, and I'm guessing you probably don't want to go to those :P
Hope you have fun on your trip!

I don't know Los Angeles well enough to recommend much, but since you'll almost certainly be passing through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), you might take a look at an airport restaurant called "The Encounter." It is shaped like a UFO and has very strange decor. The food isn't all that great, though, so you may only want to look. (http://www.encounterlax.com/)
My wife enjoyed the Third Street Promenade in downtown Santa Monica. There was a lot of shopping and many interesting people to see. (http://www.downtownsm.com/)
In general, I would recommend that you stay away from downtown Los Angeles itself, unless you are looking for a scary Blade Runner-like experience.
