Using a vacuum cleaner hose to remove impacted mochi?? HONTO?? ~ bikkurishtane
(@-@)

This sounds very dangerous to me. I work in a hospital and I have never heard of using suction, especially a home vacuum cleaner attachment, to save some from choking to death! Done correctly, the Heimlich maneuver is extremely effective, regardless of how "sticky" or dry the stuck object (mochi, bread, steak, whatever) is.

A lot of serious, life threatening damage could easily be done by sticking a vacumm cleaner hose of any size or shape down someone's throat or trachea, especially an elderly person! Expelling any foreign object from the pharynx with forced air from below is much more effective and far less dangerous that sticking another foreign object down the pharynx from the outside - you could easily force the object farther into the trachea or even lodge it in the bronchial tubes, crush the trachea/bronchial tubes and larynx, and easily tear a hole in the esophagus, trachea and/or bronchial tubes, any of which could result in death faster than choking!!!

Good gravy please don't try this at home! Just call 119 (Nihon de) and learn how to use the Heimlich maneuver and CPR from a certified trainer!

Totemo abunai!!!

Mochi vacuum attachment? Like in the movie タンポポ, right? Hehe. Happy New Year to you, too!

Juan

Wow! A vacuum cleaner attachment, in case you are choking on cake. Only in Japan! ;-)
