SMBC consulting has released its "What was big in 2007" ranking. ｡｡As usual, they use the Sumo Banzuke format (East vs West).

No1. none (EAST) - none (WEST)
Yokozuna (No1) were not chosen on either side. Actually I don't think we had such big hit this year, so I agree with these results.

No2. Outlet mall(EAST) - $500 PC (WEST)
The big outlet MITSUI outlet park opened this year in Iruma Saitama. It has over 200 shops and a food court. But the place was not news because of its size, it was on the news because of a super long line to parking when it opened. It was normal to wait three hours to enter. $500 PC (of course we say 50000yen PC) was hot too. 15.4inch monitor, Celeron M 530, 1GB RAM. It's pretty good.

No3. Atsuhime(EAST) - Hanabatake farm raw Caramel (WEST)
Atsuhime was the title of this year's Taiga Drama of NHK. I didn't watch (here are some movies) but I heard it's really popular and had good viewer ratings. Taiga can be such a big topic for the year, the setting place (it is Kagoshima in the case of Atsuhime) for
the drama might have more tourists than usual. Each prefecture expects NHK to pick a story about their land or history. My co-worker bought that caramel and I ate one. It's delicious but before I enjoyed the taste, it melted away so quickly, too soft! Then each piece cost around $1, I prefer regular Morinaga caramel.

No4. Running & Bicycle (EAST) - Wii Fit (WEST)
Because of metabo health check, people care about their weight and size very much and also because of gas price, some started to go to work by bicycle. Running and Bicycle items were sold very well in online shopping. My friend quit the gym and started jogging too, he said he wanted to save money from the gym. Financial crisis effects many things here too. Regarding Wii fit, I have never seen somebody who uses it still now. Do you?

No5. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (EAST) - Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (WEST)
I have never played "Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G", but it looks pretty good in this trailer. I don't know about Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea well too, but I will say that fish is not cute at all.

No.6 Omusubiyama Sekihan fumi (EAST) - Beijing Olympics (WEST).
In this ranking, I was most hooked to this Omusubiyama Sekihan fumi. It's a kind of furikake, so just mixing with white rice is all that's necessary. But the point is this one not only adds some flavor, it changes the color and texture of rice like sticky rice sekihan. Cooking seikihan is not so easy, but with this stuff, you can enjoy sekihan immediately. I love sekihan too, I will buy this one on the way home tonight! Ah, Beijing Olympic was held this year! I felt it was a long time ago...

No.7 Blu ray recorder (EAST) - The railway museum (WEST).
Oh, I didn't know that Blu ray recorder. Do you have something you want to record in such high quality? I have nothing, actually I don't need to record or save anything. :-) The railway museum in Omiya city opened this October and they already have about 2 million people in this year. Not only kids, railway otaku will love it there.

No.8 Nikon D90 (EAST) - H&M (WEST).
Nikon D90 is a middle class camera with a movie function that was released in August. H&M finally opened in Ginza and Harajuku. They made good sales even though Japanese department stores sales fell 6.8% year-over-year in October. Maybe it would be worse now.

No.9 Nabe Soup (EAST) - Cross walker (WEST).
Various types of Nabe soup are really helpful to me too, I just need to cut vegetables, tofu and meats. I like Kimchi soup but recently curry is my favorite one. An interesting one is collagen soup, it makes my skin smooth next morning. It' true! I picked cross walker in this post. Then  I realized banana diet is not ranked here. Hmm, why? It was a such big craze.

No.10 Stupid characters (EAST) - Blood type book (WEST).
Stupid characters means some TV talents appear in the quiz TV show "Hexagon". Their answers hopelessly miss the points and are unique. However they don't care about being laughed at and enjoyed the show. So now they are loved as "obaka chara (stupid Characters)". Now they make a group named "sense of shame" and release some CDs. I picked that blood type book in this post. I don't know why Japanese like such blood analysis, you will disagree but many Japanese agree that each blood type has some typical characters.
