Today I couldn't find anything fun. I enjoyed this article from the UK magazine Empire: "The Top 10 Depressing Movies." Oh, number 6 is "Grave of the Fireflies."That is a movie I have never seen and I will run away if somebody who’s seen it talks about it, but I've know the story 100%. I don't want to be sad when watching a movie. But Japanese like sad stories sometimes. Do you remember when I wrote about it in this post: "A Dog of Flanders"?
Do you know any other sad movies? ?I read The Green Mile by Steven King and when I finished reading, I decided I wouldn’t watch the movie version if it was ever made into one. Actually, it was later made into a film starring Tom Hunks, but I wouldn’t even watch the trailer. :-)

Because of the comments, I decided to look for the movie "Nobody Knows".
It was the most incredibly depressing movie I have ever seen. The fact that this was based on a true story and was toned down for the movie made it worse.
I wish to have the link to the support group now.

I never saw GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES. I did see MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO. I read the two films were shown at the same event. I think the TOTORO film was shown after GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES to cheer people up. I also read that people were given a note after GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES telling them NOT to commit suicide after seeing the film.

Wow, I'm surprised so many people have seen Nobody Knows...I agree, we need a support group now :D
Also drebes, you should watch "The Uchoten Hotel." It's a very funny movie, and I think YOU does a great job for her part in it.

I went to your website to find the link to so net. You wrote that so net was the best translation from Japanese to English. I wanted to find a translation for the Japanese wikipedia article on the show moshimo. It has the English subtitle "the tour makes your Sunday happy." It is kind of ironic that your post on the 10 most depressing films is what greeted me when I searched for your website.

Grave of the Fireflies is indeed very sad. Probably the saddest anime ever made. But also the best. My personal favorite.
Nobody Knows is also sad, especially as it's based on actual events.
I also just saw 10 Promises to my Dog (犬と私の10の約束). It's a happy/sad movie.

For about a week after seeing "Nobody Knows" I was wondering if I could find a support group for people who have seen this movie. I liked the movie and even bought the DVD but have not yet been able to watch it again.
I never saw the movie "One Liter of Tears" but the TV series of the story was incredibly sad but also very inspiring.

I was just about to post that the sadest movie I ever watched was "Nobody Knows", when I saw Sam's comment. Agreed 100%. The strange thing, which I learned only much later, is that "You" the main acress in the movie, is actually more famous in Japan as a comedian!

Grave of the Fireflies is REALLY sad. Especially the first half.
I watched a Japanese movie called 「誰も知らない」 (Nobody Knows) once that was unbelievably sad. It was about some children in Tokyo who are abandoned by their mother and try to survive on their own, but it's too difficult.
I prefer movies that are both happy and sad, because I think they're more realistic. Even if parts of life are sad, there are always good times too. Still, sad movies are sometimes better to watch when I'm feeling depressed, because the characters are having a more difficult time than I am. (^_^;;

Yes, Grave of the Fireflies is a very sad film...
Ikiru (Kurosawa) and, of the recent examples, Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro) come to mind.
